Nick Ball has taken another step closer to a huge showdown with Naoya Inoue after retaining his WBA featherweight title with a stoppage victory over TJ Doheny at the M&S Arena
The Liverpool man has been linked to a fight with Inoue for a sustained period now and there’s every chance a meeting between the pair could occur later this year.
Ball reminded his adoring public of his quality credentials as he overcame a tough start to eventually grind Doheny down.
Since becoming world champion against Ray Ford last year, Ball has continued to display his ferocity, and he has now racked up two successful defences after beating Ronny Rios last year and more recently Doheny.
The Irishman tried everything to live with Ball’s pace but after shipping plenty of punishment in the tenth session, it was decided by his corner that he had taken enough punishment.
That decision was the correct and it allowed to celebrate with his fans as it appears that Liverpool has a new fighting superstar.
If Inoue is next, then Ball will be facing the toughest test of his career as he welcomes the Japanese superstar to a new weight class.
Inoue has looked unbeatable in every weight category he has occupied, but could a move to featherweight be a step too far?
Frank Warren, Ball’s promoter, has guided his charge expertly in recent years and he’s had hos say on what could be next
“If [Inoue] that happens, it’ll be towards the end go the year or the start of next year. That’s the plan,” said Warren when speaking immediately after the fight in the ring.
“Our job is to keep him busy and keep coming back here. Great undercard as well with fantastic fighters. I’ve got to take my hat off to TJ. Nick Ball is the best featherweight in the world.”
