Ricky Hatton believes Conor Benn is facing an uphill battle when he steps into the ring with Chris Eubank Jr on April 26th.
The all-British grudge fight is set to be one of the biggest sporting events of 2025 as Eubank Jr and Benn renew a family rivalry that saw their fathers, Chris Sr and Nigel Benn, clash twice during the 1990s. Those two battles were popular mainstream events, and they’ve allowed Chris Jr and Conor to carry on the feud over 30 years later.
The bad tempers between the pair have already boiled over in recent weeks with both fighters separated by security after Eubank Jr slapped Benn with an egg at the press conference to publicise the upcoming fight.
The pair are now beginning training camps to get themselves ready for combat and their paths won’t cross until fight week when the eyes of the world will be watching.
Eubank Jr enters the contest a decent favourite due to his advantages in size and experience, and Hatton thinks that could help the Brighton man.
The former world champion has commended Benn for taking on the opportunity, and despite making a move to a higher weight class, Hatton believes he will give a good account of himself.
“I think he’s got to keep a cool head. His dad was very gung-ho, threw everything to the wind. Conor is a little more patient, skilful, goes in behind the jab a bit more where Nigel just used to come in,” said Hatton when speaking to Seconds Out.
“I think Nigel will agree with me he’s got a good boxing ability, he’s got to be aggressive but use a bit of finesse and be clever in his approach.
“But listen, he is up against it, he’s going up in levels. He’s never fought anyone at the level of Eubank Jr at his own weight, let alone going up two weights so it is a massive ask, but even though Conor hasn’t got the experience his dad has, he’s got every bit of that will and confidence and self desire.”
