Jaron Ennis, known as `Boots` (32-0 29 KO), made the first defence of his IBF welterweight title, defeating former WBA "regular" champion David Avanesyan (30-5 18 KO) with a fifth round TKO victory, on Saturday 13th July in front of over 14,000 plus at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center.

From the opening round, "Boots" Ennis exhibited he had too much in his arsenal for Avanesyan to compete with, switching from orthodox to southpaw with ease. Ennis had more than tripled Avanesyan's punches by the end of the fight, landing 152 to 53.

Ennis's first fight since his promotional deal with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing was a massive success. The fight was broadcast on DAZN. Ennis knocked down Avanesyan in the fifth round, and the challenger looked exhausted as he headed back to the corner. Before the sixth round started, the referee stopped the fight on the advice of Avanesyan trainer Carl Greaves. According to IFL TV, Avanesyan may have suffered a facial injury that forced the retirement on the stool.

Hearn said he would look to stage another fight for Ennis in October or November. "The plan is to unify at welterweight, then move up to super-welterweight.”

The fight the boxing world would love to see, is Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis (32-0 29 KO) vs Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford (40-0 31 KO).
